this was followed by a mega cupcake from harris teeter.... now, most people would probably spring for the better dessert at milton's (like the butterscotch coconut pie). not me. for some insane reason teeter's mega cupcakes are my absolute favorite desserts. favorite!
oooh let's back up a day because this deserves a blog mention - on wednesday, Denise and Rod took us to this Thai place in town that was sooo good! the only Thai food i had previously had was in indonesia, and i didn't actually get to order for myself so i didn't so much like it, and J had only had it once.... so we were intrigued :) it was sooo good!!! so if you're in raleigh and have a craving for thai, you should go here:
so back to the birthday. we also watched diary of a wimpy kid b/c i had really been wanting to see it - not so impressed. maybe if we had 5th graders it'd be nice. but for us, not so much.
anyway - now to the weekend.
we got to see Mary Beth and Carlos which was such a blessing! i was sooooo glad they were in NC before we left!! i miss them and it was great to chat adn catch up even just for a few hours.
then the craziness started.
weavil cookout that we'd been planning on attending all summer, yeah it didn't happen. instead we went to this super nice restaurant in downtown winston that was packed (abnormally) and the poor guy waiting tables was the only guy working (seriously, it was a fluke. normally 3 tables is busy... there were more than 10). then the kitchen ran out of stuff that my uncles had ordered, so they just stomped out in a huff. so josh and i, my parents, and my grandmother were left there.... embarrassed at how my uncles dealt with the situation and frustrated b/c this was our attempt to see the family one last time before we head overseas. but - the food was incredible. so at least we had that going for us :) and we tipped the waiter more than normal and gave him a cupcake because we felt awful! do i still have to claim them as family?
anyway - sunday we were going to take my grandmother out for lunch one last time. her health isn't as great as it was and three years is a long time when you're in your late 80s, so it really was important to me to see her again. so we show up to her place and one of my uncles is there as well, so we invite him to go to cracker barrel with us - no, he doesn't like their food and you have to wait so long so they're just going to go to biscuitville. and he takes off with my grandmother in tow.... so, too bad. see you in 3 years.
needless to say, J and I were frustrated. but at least we tried and there was nothing we could do about it...so we spent a few hours at Old Salem with my parents, where my mom took a billion photos (if i had them i'd post them) and we got some yummy goodies from the bakery there :) woot.
then we went off to high point to stay at this awesome hotel :) my main birthday present was a night at the J.H. Adams Inn - totally awesome! seriously, i think the bathroom was almost the size of our apartment. ha. ok, not really, but it was huge and nice and we loved it! we even got to have frozen yogurt with J's old boss and his family, which was great because we weren't sure when we'd get to see them again :) cutest kids ever.
then monday, i got these:
and i love them. you are totally allowed to make fun of us for owning 2 pairs each.... but they're totally worth it. yep, we're that cool.
had we remembered our camera, we would have much cooler pictures to post with real people in them, but alas, we ALWAYS forget our camera! ugh. we'll do better, i promise!
