This story is from last Monday.... but we needed that much time for it to become one of those funny things we did instead of something we're frustrated about :)
It was about 7:30 and we had just finished dinner and were getting ready to settle in to a nice night of homework and memorizing words when J decided to take out the trash. Normally, he can carry it all down by himself, but this time there was too much (thanks to the moving process). So, he asked A to help carry some things out. J grabbed his keys and had the door open when A walked downstairs, so they headed down, dropped off the trash and walked back up the stairs. J put his keys in the lock.... and it wouldn't turn. Um, problem. We just kind of stood in the hallway for a few minutes, tried the key again, and then J says, "Oh, your keys were still in the bottom lock. We can't get in."
Wonderful. And A was dressed in her ratty sweatpants from college. Well, what is there to do but walk to a friends house and ask for help? (If we had language, we would have talked to the neighbor, but at this point it would have just added to the frustration). PTL one of our friends lives only a 10 minute walk from our place, so we get there and can't remember exactly which building it is since we've only been once. We started at one building and were about to rind the bell when J says, "hm, I don't think this is it... let's just look at the next one and make sure." So we walked up the street and the next building was it. But then there was the minor problem of knowing which number they are to ring them.... providentially, we pushed the right one and when our friend heard the confused "Hello?" in english, he buzzed us in.
We told him what happened, he called another friend who used to live in the neighborhood and found out where the locksmith was.... so we went, and he had closed less than 5 minutes before we got there. Friend 1 calls the locksmith and doesn't get far... apparently the locksmith isn't a big fan of talking to foreigners whose language is not perfect. So, friend 2 calls and the dude says he can be there in about 30 minutes. Some conversation goes on and we decide to go to another locksmith just to see if he could be there sooner... so we walk down a few streest and check, nope, he doesn't sound like he's coming back out at all.
Call back locksmith number 1 who says he'll come and call when he's on his way. So we go hang out with Friend 1 for oooooh, 2 hours til the locksmith calls. We meet him at our place and it take him all of 2 seconds to open our door. Comforting, yes?
So, after 2+ hours of waiting and 50TL later, we learned out lesson. Never leave your key in the door on the inside.
